Wood Fencing     For many years, the picket fence has been a symbol of an American ideal. Though an older design, new styles and applications have continued to demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of the picket.

Picket fences typically leave more than a one-inch space between boards and tend to be shorter in height. They usually instill a sense of boundary more than that of privacy and are great for children, pets, and pools.

The boards -- or in this case, 'pickets' -- can be customized to any width or height and include a variety of top options from flat-top, to standard point, to dog-eared corners. Consider scalloping or crowning fence sections for a uniquely-shaped look. Or, consider spindle pickets rather than more traditional boards for an elegant and modern style.

Level sections of picket fencing are interrupted to bend along a small hill.

When tall enough, picket works well for containing dogs.

This standard-pointed picket fence does not extenuate its posts, leaving a strait and repeating pattern of pickets.

Once more, this fence does not extenuate its posts, leaving it with a repeating, traditional look.

The short height of this picket fence allows it to easily duck under foliage and tree limbs.

A picket fence with extenuated posts and scalloped tops make for a unique look.

Form and function: Despite the decorative elements of this fence, it still effectively holds back its canine contents.

Picket fencing provides a unique barrier without shutting out the surrounding area.
